Already in the first plenary session, Mario Calus pointed out that this year, for the first time, more papers were submitted on genomic prediction than on GWAS and QTL prediction (Figure 1).<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP TrackedChange SCXW85248761 BCX9\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW124164267 BCX9\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW124164267 BCX9\">On the one hand, there were sessions that were specifically dedicated to the topic of \u201cMethods and Tools\u201d. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW124164267 BCX9\">T<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW124164267 BCX9\">he topic \u201cGenomic Selection\u201d, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun AdvancedProofingIssueV2Themed SCXW124164267 BCX9\">in particular single<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun AdvancedProofingIssueV2Themed SCXW124164267 BCX9\">&#8211;<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun AdvancedProofingIssueV2Themed SCXW124164267 BCX9\">step<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW124164267 BCX9\"> breeding value estimation, was also repeatedly addressed in <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW124164267 BCX9\">additional<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW124164267 BCX9\"> sessions. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW124164267 BCX9\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_text_column\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW84819887 BCX9\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW84819887 BCX9\">As a first <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW84819887 BCX9\">example<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW84819887 BCX9\">, Daniela Lourenco from the <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW84819887 BCX9\">University<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW84819887 BCX9\"> of Georgia <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW84819887 BCX9\">presented<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW84819887 BCX9\"> the further development of <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW84819887 BCX9\">the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wageningenacademic.com\/pb-assets\/wagen\/WCGALP2022\/36_012.pdf\">BLUPF90 programs<\/a><\/span><\/span><span class=\"TrackedChange SCXW84819887 BCX9\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW84819887 BCX9\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW84819887 BCX9\">. This well-known program package was fundamentally revised. It can be used mainly for variance component estimation and traditional and genomic <\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"TrackedChange SCXW84819887 BCX9\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW84819887 BCX9\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW84819887 BCX9\">breeding value estimation. Several years ago, we argued that there is little gain in accuracy if all imputed sequence variants are considered. Meta-Founders is used to model the genetics of animals that have no parental information in the pedigree. In this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wageningenacademic.com\/pb-assets\/wagen\/WCGALP2022\/19_001.pdf\">presentation<\/a>, it was additionally shown how the information of foreign animals can be considered<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW7115258 BCX9\">.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW7115258 BCX9\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559740&quot;:280}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TrackedChange SCXW166302274 BCX9\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW166302274 BCX9\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW166302274 BCX9\">Single step breeding value estimation does not stop at beef cattle. The presentation <\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"TrackedChange SCXW166302274 BCX9\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW166302274 BCX9\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW166302274 BCX9\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wageningenacademic.com\/pb-assets\/wagen\/WCGALP2022\/19_004.pdf\">\u201cAccuracy of pedigree and genomic predictions of meat quality in a multi-breed cattle using single and two step model\u201d<\/a> <\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"TrackedChange SCXW166302274 BCX9\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW166302274 BCX9\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW166302274 BCX9\">highlighted the importance of this new methodology for traits that are difficult to capture, such as &#8220;meat eating quality&#8221;, which includes tenderness, juiciness and flavor. This set of traits is extremely relevant to consumers. The reliability of <\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"TrackedChange SCXW166302274 BCX9\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW166302274 BCX9\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW166302274 BCX9\">EBVs<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"TrackedChange SCXW166302274 BCX9\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW166302274 BCX9\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW166302274 BCX9\"> can be improved with genomic information. This is called <\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"TrackedChange SCXW53417639 BCX9\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW53417639 BCX9\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW53417639 BCX9\">&#8220;beef-on-dairy&#8221;. Tools are being developed to obtain good predictions for this as well. An example of this was presented at the talk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wageningenacademic.com\/pb-assets\/wagen\/WCGALP2022\/47_020.pdf\">&#8220;Decision support tools to support a more sustainable beef-on-dairy industry&#8221;<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"TrackedChange SCXW53417639 BCX9\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW53417639 BCX9\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW53417639 BCX9\">. Three methods have been developed in Ireland. The first is the Dairy Beef Index (DBI), which identifies elite beef cattle for dairy. Thanks to this index, birth traits and slaughter traits can be improved simultaneously. The second tool allows ranking of <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW53417639 BCX9\">matings<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW53417639 BCX9\">. With the third, the resulting progeny are ranked according to their market value.
